About The Area

Mackay is a coastal city in Central Queensland, approximately 1,000 kilometres from the Brisbane CBD. A section of the Great Barrier Reef is off Mackay’s coast (including Airlie Beach, located 150 kilometres north of Mackay and 8 kilometres from Cannonvale), while closer to shore are the islands of St. Bees, with reefs, rainforests and koalas, and Keswick, which is rich in marine life. Mackay itself is known for its harbour beach, marina and Bluewater Lagoon, a city water park. Inland from Mackay, Eungella national park is a habitat for rare frogs and platypus. Mackay has three main shopping centres; Caneland Central is the largest of these, with more than 130 speciality stores. Mount Pleasant Shopping Centre is the second major shopping centre in the Mackay region, with department stores, supermarkets and other speciality outlets. Outside the main centre, a number of bulky-good outlets also operate, along with a six-screen Birch Carroll & Coyle cinema complex. The Mackay City Heart, located in the older city centre, is another thriving part of the city. It is the home of many of the region's banks, law, accounting and other professional service firms. Two major highways, the A1 (Bruce Highway), and highway 70 (Peak Downs Highway), pass through Mackay. The A1 connects the city to Townsville, Proserpine, Cannonvale, Airlie Beach and Cairns in the north, and Rockhampton and Brisbane in the south. Mackay also has a number of health and educational facilities.
