Known as the “winterless north”, the region boasts an enviable climate, allowing a year-round outdoor lifestyle. Famed for beautiful beaches and numerous walking and cycling tracks, there is an abundance of green space, including The Parihaka Scenic Reserve, with roads and walking tracks leading to Mount Parihaka, a 20-million-year-old volcano. There are scenic walks leading to Whangarei Falls, Kiwi North museum and world-class diving at the Poor Knights Islands, just off the coast from nearby Tutukaka. Whangarei city is fast growing, with several major developments underway, including the new Hundertwaser Art Centre, Wairau Maori Art Gallery, new Civic Centre, parks and waterfront spaces and children’s playgrounds and skate parks. There is a University of Auckland campus in the city as well as the main campus of NorthTec, which provides most of the region’s tertiary education. Whangarei has a number of primary and secondary schools as well as sports clubs, with bus and rail services and a local airport.
